Is knowledge needed on a subject to be wise about it, or are there other forms of wisdom?

Reply to TiredThinker What do you mean by "knowledge"?

I understand wisdom as an agential notion- i.e. a notion primarily with respect to your know-how and decisions rather than your know-whats & beliefs.

I suppose I mean acquired understanding of the nature of something that predictions are possible.

A friend of mine who is into some more esoteric stuff says one should rely more on wisdom without knowledge as if they need not be connected.

Thats what the logicians and rationalists want you to think. If that were true, then the nerds, dorks, and eggheads would have street smarts, am I wrong? Just being devils advocate.

True. But then the KEY to wisdom cannot be the same key to foolishness, can it?
Rationality leads to technical truths which can be used for good or ill. Technical truth is not wisdom.

Maybe the secret is in the way we use it, whatever it is. There's a reason why one of the greatest philosophies to come out of the East is all about the Tao (translated as "way" by some but not all). Rejecting it can mean the difference between pain and a whole lotta pain. :snicker:
