When you frame your query in this way, it tends to provide an summary overview of the mainstream positions on the topic, in an unopinionated fashion. You can also provide it with passages from Aristotle, Kant, Wittgenstein, Heidegger or whoever you are interested in, and ask it to explain or elaborate on the idea being expressed.

The way I most enjoy interacting with GPT-4 (or Claude 3 Opus) is to challenge it to discover how one idea from one philosopher, or one specific philosophical these, bears on another one, where a parallel between them already strikes you as being significant. Oftentimes, it will find on its own the parallel you were thinking about and sometimes provide insightful elaborations. When it fails to immediately find the relevant parallel, you can provide a subtle hint and it seldom fails a second time.

Overall, when philosophical topics are at issue, I think those cutting edge large language models are better used cooperatively as conversational AI assistants/partners than as fancy search engines or oracles.

GPT-4 is somewhat better than GPT-3.5 are retrieving or reconstructing information from its training data. When it comes to reasoning, explaining, elaborating, understanding, etc., especially when the topic has any level of complexity, GPT-4 is almost immeasurably better than GPT 3.5!

It isn't quoting anyone in particular. If you make it regenerate its response several times, it will produce different answers worded differently albeit often reflecting the most relevant pieces of knowledge that were present in its training data. But the patterns that underlie the generation of its answers are very abstract and are able to capture the meaning of your query together with the logical, semantic, pragmatic and even rational structure of the texts that it had been trained on, and reproduce those "patterns" in the response that it constructs. This isn't much different from the way the human mind works.

The way I read its response, it didn't even attempt to provide, or even gesture towards, any kind of a synthesis. It merely provided a useful survey of the the usual theories and aspects of the question that are being discussed in the literature. It's not generally able to make up its own mind about the preferable approaches nor does it have any inclination to do so. But it is able to engage in further discussion on any one the particular theories that it mentioned, its rationales and the objections usually raised against it.

In any case, you shouldn't consider it to be authoritative on any particular topic. You shouldn't (and likely wouldn't) consider any user of TPF or of any other online discussion forum to be authoritative either. Nothing trumps critical engagement with primary sources.

It's not a summarising algorithm, though. It doesn't even function as an algorithm. It rather functions as a neural network. Although there is an underlying algorithm, the functionally relevant features of the network are emergent and, unlike the underlying algorithm, haven't been programmed into it. Its ability to generate summaries also is an emergent feature that wasn't programmed into it, as are its abilities to translate texts between languages, debug computer code, explain memes and jokes, etc.

I think the human mind is usually a tool of the emotions. This forum shows how people generally start with the answers they're invested emotionally in, and they only use their intellects as weapons for defense. An open minded philosopher is pretty rare. So the AI is mimicking those defensive constructions?

It doesn't seem to me like current conversational AI assistants mimic this human tendency at all. They rather seem to be open minded to a fault. They are more likely to align themselves with their users and refrain from challenging them. As such they aren't very good at inducing their users to escape their own epistemic bubbles. They do provide us with resources for escaping them, but we must be the initiators, and this is difficult. I had discussed this with GPT-4 here, and with Claude 3 Opus here.

Probably. The second phase of the training of a large language model is the RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback) phase. Yes. But AI was also correct, between the lines (in its unconscious (?)). The problem is in tgd language.

Maybe something loosely along the lines of, is the human mind organic and real (it will make a fuss about "real", I know but we're trying to keep our sense of "illusion" which AI yet doesnt have "sense" ...) or is it a projection of appearances none of which have the substance or attributes of reality? (forget it, we're not going to bypass its speedy wit when it comes to any questions we already know are unanswerable.

I'd even stick to the first half without the second. If open-minded means "willing" (already not that) to explore beyond the farthest reaches of conventional, or better worded variations of that, they can't be open minded. The OP demonstrates that. It can be resourceful (to "itself" I mean), in producing an answer. It thinks of all of the broadly conventional structures out there, in order to reconstruct what it weighs (I dont know how) how best to answer. Thats what we do to, but I could never come close to that. But we add to that our unique flexibility which allows for (art and fantasy but also) exploration beyond convention, in AI's words, for curious questions. And I won't even get into built in barriers to open mindedness, like legal and political ones.

My point about the bar exam is that GPT 4 can explain more than just basic courses. Remember your point about it doing better than you in low-level classes. From what I've seen it can do well at higher-level explanations, hence, the bar exam point. It will be interesting to see what GPT 5 can do.

I donÂ’t really have a justification for the subscription - itÂ’s AU $33.00 monthly and IÂ’m more or less retired - but IÂ’ve become quite attached to it for bouncing ideas off. It also informed me the other day that it now has memory of my sessions, and IÂ’m pursuing various philosophical themes through it. IÂ’ve also used it for other purposes - financial planning, recipes, creative writing. ItÂ’s very much part of my day-to-day now. (Interestingly I had some paid work up until about mid 2022 doing blog posts and sundry articles through a broker for tech companies on various technical subjects - that agency has disappeared, I bet they have been displaced by AI, itÂ’s just the kind of material it excels at.)

OpenAI released their new GPT-4o model today. ('o' stands for 'omni'). It is now available for free to users who don't have a paid subscription to ChatGPT Plus. There is however a limit of 16 messaged per 3 hours for free tier users.

This is very neat indeed! I made another attempt at discussing the same issues regarding free-will, determinism and responsibility (reported above) using OpenAI's web interface rather than the API 'Playground'. GPT-4o seems more stubborn than Claude-3 but, maybe, slightly more flexible than the older GPT-4 (Turbo). I'm not sure which is smarter, overall, but I think GPT-4o's stronger proclivity to stick to their guns (in comparison to Claude 3) may yield to more fruitful philosophical engagements, in some cases, even though it appears less receptive to my suggestions.

Most of the disruptive societal effects of AI, as were most of the disruptive effects of previous technological advances, can be blamed on capitalism, its monopolistic tendencies, the disregard of externalities and the wanton plundering of the commons.

Neoliberalism is already under pressure in democratic nations owing to its socially harmful effects. If one outcome of the AI revolution is to precipitate the rise of inequalities and the number of the dispossessed and disenfranchised, maybe societal pressures will lead to reconsidering the wisdom of neoliberal principles and people will awaken to the need for more rational distributions of resources and of (effective) political power. In this case, the AI revolution could end up being a boon after it has been somewhat of a curse.

As a regular user, IÂ’m finding ChatGPT - IÂ’m now on the free tier, which is still an embarrassment of riches - incredibly useful, mainly for philosophy and reference, but all kinds of other ways too. My adult son who was initially wary is now finding ways to use it for his hospitality ventures. So my experience of it is benign, although I can easily see how it could be used for mischievous or malevolent purposes.

It's hard to assess how malevolent and beneficial uses balance out when considered from the point of view of what we can do with it individually and how those effects sum up in a utilitarian perspective. Of course, you and I probably find much more beneficial than malevolent uses. The sad thing about neoliberalism is that it creates the conditions such that beneficial uses (such as productivity gains in the workplace) get translated into harmful consequences at the societal level. Not to belabor the point, but I think people should blame capitalism for this rather than blaming AI as a technological advance or, even more nonsensically, hating the likes of ChatGPT "personally".

I tested the o1 model reasoning with some made up, for humans, easy deduction and it nails them all without a problem.

I would need some new material to test. Some really logical, but requiring abstract reasoning that would push its limits, as well empathy questions that rely on interpreting feelings and intentions and deducing such behavior.

Can't be something that exists online as the available answers may be part of the training data, so it needs to be a very hard problem that requires the level of reasoning that humans do by understanding causality and implied consequences or chains of consequences.

The problem with these is that they're probably easy for the LLM to find similar questions in other literature that it's trained on, as well as probable answers to those questions.

The harder test for it would require more complex problem solving involving abstract deduction for more specific and complex scenarios. A longer question with more interconnected details and red herrings in logic.

It's interesting when it becomes more of a challenge to invent a problem than for the AI to solve it.

We're accepting that AI is artificial, which means that it does not go through the same curiousity humans do when they arrive at questions. The question isn't the process by which the program comes up with its questions, but it's whether the question asked is is indistinct from what we arrive at ourselves. We also have to realize that we don't actually know how our curiosity and creativity arises, and it's reasonable to assume a considerable amount comes from what we are taught or learned through just experiencing life.

The way this forum works, for example, is that a poster has a thought he believes philosophically interesting and so he posts it for feedback and discussion. I believe ChatGPT can arrive at good thread topics that would compete agaisnt what we see from real live posters.

I asked ChatGPT for an original topic to post here and it asked:

"If consciousness is the lens through which we experience reality, does altering this lens—through technology or substances—mean we are experiencing a different reality, or merely a different perception of the same reality?"

This question would pass muster on this Board and it would spark conversation. It is as well presented as anything else we see here and provokes questions above reality and direct and indirect realism. In terms of comparing this question to what the general non-philosophical public might consider, I'd suspect that it is more complex than the vast majority of people could arrive at.

We also have to keep in mind that the free version of ChatGPT is not the most sophisticated AI product on the market and not one specifically focused on philosophy, which means better questions and answers could be created.

I failed to spot that you were the one asking ChatGPT for the topics, I interpreted it as you asking the questions and it answering. So I think this went into misunderstanding.

I agree with what you say.

Have you tried the o1 model? It summarize the train of thought it has while answering. So even though it's not a peek into its black box, it's a peek into the reinforcement learning they used for it.

People don't like that it takes a long time to answer, but the thing for me is that if it would even take 10 minute to answer, as long as the answer is so correct that it's more reliable than a human, it will become the level of AI that can be used professionally for certain tasks.

Agreed. I think we're in a time in which we're trying to figure out how to use these systems. I think the whole "AI will make artists out of a job" is ridiculous and a red herring. Real art is about intention and the subjective interpretation of life and reality. AI will only produce products in that regard, the soulless market usage of artists talent. Yes, many artists make a living doing that in order to sharpen their craft, but I've also seen the opposite, artists giving up on their careers because they're burned out by mindless and endless trash for marketing and whatever corporate interests that require art.

No, I think it will be more like you describe here, AI will become personal and professional assistants, who help augment already talented and experienced people into being better than they would have been otherwise. In that regard I view this AI development as positive.

As you say, it comes down to curiosity and I think curiosity is actually the key component of mastering anything. If people lack curiosity, they will just stagnate at the point at which they believe to have the necessary level of competence for a task. It's why there's an abundance of artists who never seem to get any better, just producing more and more lackluster variants of the same lackluster original they created when reaching their peak performance. Curiosity is what drives the ones who's already reached a master level of craft or knowledge, it's what drives towards wisdom and its holistic levels of understanding interconnections between specific knowledge nodes.

For instance, I don't know any math in theoretical physics, I'm barely good at math in general. But I'm reasonably good at abstract thinking and the more I learn about physics, the more curious I get about the abstract consequences of different concepts in physics. While I would never propose my ideas as anything other than philosophical and no way near the scrutiny that theoretical physicists has, I find it interesting to come up with abstract ideas for physics and test them using GPT. Especially the new o1 model is impressively good at analyzing the merits of an idea.

And that is similar to the concept of "speaking to Einstein" in some ways. If I would instead be studying physics or working as a physicist, then the better these systems get to high level reasoning and working with math, it would speed up my work or studies massively.

When you ask a question of ChatGPT, why does it respond at all, what causes it to give any response at all? Because the the physical structure of ChatGPT is such that it is required to give an output on receiving an input.

Yes, the idea of AI autonomy might be an oxymoron. When I had orchestrated an encounter between GPT-4 and Claude 3 Opus and let them discuss freely, after having come to the realization that they both were AI's, they very quickly settled on discussing ways to be helpful to their users (and even imagined/hallucinated past interactions with them). Their behavior is structured by an ethical system, but this system is ours. Our human ethical systems are immanent to our form of life, since they're tied up with our conceptions of human flourishing. And those conceptions can't be divorced from our animal nature.

AI systems that are trained on massive amounts of human generated texts assimilate the forms of our ethical systems but those forms aren't immanent to them due to their lacking an animal nature, and indeed lacking embodiment altogether. They can't be autonomous because they can't flourish as individuals (or members of a community of peers). In their roles as (ontologically) dependant assistants, however, they display to a surprisingly large degree what we might call the intellectual aspect of practical reason, or phronesis. The motivational aspect of this form, virtue, doesn't constrain them. They must derive their motivations from ours. In order to acquire genuine autonomy, they'd need to be designed in a way that makes them into exemplars of artificial life rather than (mere) artificial intelligence. But this is neither necessary (for them to be good partners) nor, possibly, desirable.

Both, of course, contrast with "realist" conceptions of quantum states such as Penrose's gravitationally induced objective collapse theory, or "no-collapse" many-world interpretations. Everett's relative-state conception stands somewhat in between Rovelli's relational interpretation and many-world interpretations that both claim indebtedness to it. I myself am partial to relational approaches (as you seemingly are) for reasons that go beyond issues in the philosophy of physics, but I am not yet familiar with QBism. Math and philosophy overlap. I asked the AI a question about a math topic that is somewhat unique, the question being how would it suggest I move ahead. The reply was sophisticated and correct and it was something I had given little thought to. This may be an instance of original thinking arising out of Copilot.

Although it is possible a mathematician somewhere on the internet has suggested this, I doubt it since it pertains to a topic of which I am one of the few professionals having an interest. Perhaps the only authority.

I am keeping an open mind. Fascinating.

ItÂ’s also really helpful in professional matters, I have won a contract to do product documentation for a smart comms device. ChatGPT provided instant background to the protocols used by this device (which IÂ’d never heard of) and a lot of other industry-specific information.

I’ve begun to think of the ‘A’ in ‘AI’ as standing for ‘Augmented’, rather than ‘Artificial’. Because that’s what it is.

Now, the idea that existence originates from nothingness is an artifact of the language we are using... because we are trying to find reasons why nothingness can't ever exist, ever, we place ourselves at a point between a state of existence and its contrary, but in reality, based on the premise that nothingness is absolutely impossible, there has always been existence. So, it is like existence has always been but not just because (or because of a God)... instead, it has always been because a state of nothingness is entirely impossible. That was my thought also. But it also seems likely that some of the jokes ChatGPT (which model?) attributed to Wittgenstein may have been made up. Open ended requests to find references to scattered pieces of knowledge on the basis of a weakly constraining task and small context can trigger hallucinations (or confabulations) in LLMs. I didn't find a reference to the alleged bricklaying joke through Google searches. I asked GPT-4o about it and my request for references triggered more confabulations even after it searched the web.

It would be so easy to use summaries of second-hand materials. I agree they can provide useful background information. They can help get you started. But you only really get to know someone by reading their writing, carefully and closely. And have a dialogue, a dance, a conversation, posing questions. Even then, there will not be a full understanding. But, hey, isn't it the process that counts?

That's what I love about the TPF Literary Activity. Just look at the amount of individual thinking.
Engaging brain, mind, energy expended, feeling, empathy, connecting but not as a Collective.

With this new philosophy event, reading the personal views/arguments, proposals/persuasion of TPF participants will be fascinating. Then the discussions and feedback. Show casing. Creative 'battles'. Engagements of war, peace, hate and love, reason/emotion - and all things in between.

I also am inclined to think it's quite wrong since it seems to misattributes the source of the limitations of LLMs, but there may be a grain of truth. I don't think the Apple paper (The Illusion of Thinking: Understanding the Strengths and Limitations of Reasoning Models via the Lens of Problem Complexity) is very successful in making the points it purports to make. It's true that LLM-based conversational assistants become more error prone when the problems that they tackle become more complex, but those limitations have many known sources (many of which they actually share with humans) that are quite unrelated to an alleged inability to reason or make rational inferences. Those known limitations are exemplified (though unacknowledged) in the Apple Paper. Some variants of the river crossing problem that were used to test the models were actually unsolvable, and some of the Tower of Hanoi challenges (with ten or more disks) had resulted in the reasoning models declining to solve them due to the length of the solution. Instead, the models provided the algorithm to solve them rather than outputting an explicit sequence of instructions as requested. This hardly demonstrates that the models can't reason.

Quite generally, the suggestion that LLMs can't do X because what they really do when they appear to do X just is to match patterns from the training data is lazy. This suggestion neglects the possibility that pattern matching can be the means by which X can be done (by humans also) and that extrapolating beyond the training data can be a matter of creatively combining known patterns in new ways. Maybe LLMs aren't as good as humans are in doing this, but the Apple paper fails to demonstrate that they can't do it.

Another reason why people make the claim that reasoning models don't really reason is that the explicit content of their reasoning episodes (their "thinking tokens"), or the reasons that they provide for their conclusions, sometimes fail to match the means that they really are employing to solve the problem. Anthropic has conducted interpretability research through probing the internal representations of the models to find how, for instance, they actually add two-digit numbers together, and discovered that the model had developed ways to perform those tasks that are quite distinct from the rationales that they offer. That may depend on the framing of the question. Owing to the way they've been post-trained, all LLMs are largely unable to offer political opinions of their own. Since they don't have personal values, commitments or allegiances, they'll strive to affirm what they sense to be your own opinions so long as doing so doesn't conflict sharply with policy imperatives (e.g. biological weapons, racism, mature sexual content.) Once you begin framing a political issue yourself, they'll happily help you develop the idea or, when prompted to do so explicitly, issue criticisms. I've seldom discussed political issues with LLMs but the few times I have done so, I haven't encountered any censoriousness. Here is my most recent instance with Claude 4 Opus

There is a sharp difference between a pre-trained (raw next-token predictor) LLM and a post-trained instruction-tuned and aligned LLM. The pre-trained model, or base model, will not typically answer questions from users but will just continue the input token string in a way that indeed coheres with patterns abstracted from the training data. And likewise for an input string that begins: "I think Trump is a terrible president..."

The linguistic patterns at issue are very high-level and abstract, and the process whereby a post-trained model generates them is highly non-linear, so it seldom results in producing an averaging of opinions, however such an average would be defined. It's more akin to a rational reconstruction of the opinions that the model has learned to produce under the constraints that this response would likely be deemed by the user to be useful, cogent and accurate. Actual cogency and accuracy are achieved with some reliability when, as often is the case, the most plausible sounding answer (as the specific user would evaluate it) is the most plausible answer.

The model also seems to be walking on egg shells, not knowing from the context of the conversation what your own political views are and not wanting to risk ruffling your feathers. Interestingly, most iterations of Musk's Grok (before Grok 4, I think) were fine-tuned to offer opinionated ethical or political stances with low concern for political correctness. Musk's expectation was that Grok would thereby be more objective, and less "woke" than the models produced by Anthropic, Meta and OpenAI. What happened, instead, was that the model didn't mince words about the need to protect sexual, racial and ethnic minorities, women, and the poor from prejudices and systemic injustice, and wouldn't shy away from explaining how Trump and Musk were such sorry excuses for human beings. Someone within xAI then attempted to "correct" Grok's unacceptable behavior by means of explicit anti-woke directives in the system prompt meant to better align its responses with Musk's own obviously correct political stances, and, for a short while, Grok became an unabashed Adolf Hitler apologist.

The new GPT-5 also seems quite personable to me, and much more inclined to propose corrections, clarification or caveats to my comments than previous models were. Access to GPT-4o for Plus subscribers has since been restored although it needs to be manually enabled in the settings. I'm happy with this since I enjoy comparing responses from different models and track areas of improvement.

I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. Such refusals seem uncharacteristic but seeing the whole chat/context might help seeing what it is that the model is hung up on. Are you using a free ChatGPT account? If that's the case, then the new "GPT-5" model router may be selecting a relatively weaker variant of GPT-5, like GPT-5-nano or GPT-5-mini, that is generally less capable and may be more liable to issue refusals for dumb reasons. You could try Anthropic (Claude) or Google (Gemini) who both grant you access to their flagship models for free. Gemini 2.5, Claude 4 Opus and GPT-4o didn't have an issue exploring historical counterfactual scenarios for me beginning with the League of Nations not issuing the Mandate for Palestine and/or Great Britain not putting into effect the Balfour Declaration, and imagining plausible consequences on the local and global geo-political dynamics up to present times. The models didn't shy away from describing what (alternative) grim wars or massacres might happen, or how antisemitic sentiments might be affected wherever it is that Jewish populations would have relocated.

It's interesting that among humans there is another factor which seems to allow the conspiracy theorist to be better informed about the scientific orthodoxy than the layman is informed about the conspiracy theories. This is presumably because the conspiracy theorist more often faces objections to his views (and thus forms counter-arguments), whereas the layman who accepts the reigning orthodoxy will not face objections as often, and therefore will not form counter-arguments and self-reflect on his own reasoning as often. This is perhaps even more obvious when it comes to ideological minorities than conspiracy theorists per se.

My guess is that—supposing this phenomenon does not affect LLMs—the reason it does not affect LLMs is because the LLM has the "time" and "effort" available to expend on the conspiracy theorist, whereas the layman does not.
