But it isn't.

That's true. Interestingly, though, in French the four "suits" can be called "enseignes" but are more commonly called "couleurs". Hence, in the context of French-suited playing cards, the term "couleur" doesn't translate "color" (as it normally does outside of this context) but rather translates "suit".

And this is why it would be more accurate to translate the French term "couleur", in this context, as "shape". Each suit is identical to a shape, in this context. Which is why you have four "couleurs" instead of just two.

And the four couleurs, in the context in question, are: Spade, Heart, Diamond, and Clover.

Why do you think that they can be called "enseignes"? Because "enseignes" (insignias, in Spanish) sounds more "Merovingian", so to speak?
